From a scientific perspective, actuators in synthetic biology are primarily defined as components of genetic circuits that generate measurable output signals or phenotypic effects (e.g., fluorescence, metabolic changes, or movement) in response to stimuli. While DNA molecules themselves are used for high-density data storage, certain specialized actuators and “molecular machines” function as “storage devices” or “effectors” to record and respond to biological information.
Based on their regulatory mechanisms, the synthetic biosensors discussed here are divided into four categories: allosteric transcription regulation, transmembrane signal transduction, RNA regulation, and CRISPR/Cas systems.

The article describes how synthetic biosensors are made programmable through genetic circuits, enabling living cells to function as biological sensing and computing systems.
The central concept of genetic circuits, in which cells can be controlled by logical DNA circuits, thereby enabling AND/OR logic, feedback, and switching.
The actuators translate biological signals into visible or functional effects, such as protein production or cell movement.
Finally, their storage and “memory function” is described, where cells can permanently store temporary signals and act, for example, through genetic toggle switches or DNA switches.

This gives rise to the combination of AI and synthetic biology!
